Turkey Day in Bronx Zapped by Blackout

NY Daily News, 11/26/04

Scores of Thanksgiving dinners were disrupted in the Bronx yesterday when an evening blackout darkened some 1,600 homes, authorities said.

The outage in Soundview was caused by a tree branch that fell on an electrical line, Con Edison spokeswoman Brenda Perez said.

Power was out between 6:40p.m. and 7:30 p.m., she said.

"There was a blue explosion in the sky," said Julio Roman, 22, who lives in the area. "All the streetlights started popping, and the whole neighborhood went black."

Power was lost in a 30-square-block area.

"My mother couldn't finish cooking Thanksgiving dinner," said Freddie Carrion, 22, an auto body worker. "We're going to have to eat mad late," he added. "Some holiday, huh?"
