Schumer, Clinton: Power Line Decision Should Rest with State

Utica Observer Dispatch, 8/9/06

The state's two U.S. senators each made statements Tuesday on the U.S. Department of Energy's determination that a large area that includes the proposed New York Regional Interconnection line is heavily congested in terms of  energy use.

That finding will lead to a public comment period that could result in the  region being designated as a National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor, which could allow the federal government to trump state regulators in approving  a power transmission project.

Here's what the two Democratic senators said:

!Sen. Hillary Clinton:

"I will evaluate the study, but I continue to believe that the question of whether to build a transmission line within New York state should be decided by  the state using its very comprehensive permitting process."

!Sen. Charles Schumer:

"This report only confirms what we already knew about electrical transmission needs in New York. It doesn't change my skepticism about how NYRI proposes to meet that need. That's why I still believe that NYRI should go through the full state approval process rather than taking a federal shortcut."
