Talks Switch to “Off”

Plans to sell a trio of power plants in Brooklyn and Queens appear considerably dimmer now that contract talks between a Houston-based energy company and a union representing plant employees have broken down.
"We were close to a new agreement," insisted Manny Hellen, president of Local 1-2 Utility Workers Union of America, which represents 177 workers at the three plants.
"We were ready to accept the [company's] proposal, but the company started to nickel-and-dime us; they changed the offer in midstream," Hellen charged.
The Reliant Energy Co. has been in talks with Local 1-2 since February over a contract due to expire in June.
Reliant owns three power plants in New York - the Gowanus Gas Turbines and Narrows Gas Turbines in Brooklyn and the Astoria Power Generation Station in Queens.
