New York Cell Phone Safety Law: AARP Presses for Law to Make Cell Phones Better Tool in Emergency

AARP Press Release, February 6, 2007

Local AARP Staff and Volunteers Available for Interviews in Most Cities

What: Tomorrow, AARP New York and consumer groups join state lawmakers to urge passage of legislation that would help people more effectively use their cell phones as a safety tool in case of emergency. The "Wireless Telephone Service Consumer Protection Act" would require cell phone companies to provide more detailed coverage maps, including where the emergency e-911 function works, helping cell phone users to better use their cell phone for safety matters.

Who: In Albany:

AARP New York

-- Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer, Chair, Consumer Affairs & Protection Cmt.

-- Assemblyman Daniel O'Donnell, Sponsor, Wireless Consumer Protection Act

-- Older New Yorkers speak about the importance of cell phones as a safety tool

-- Public Utility Law Project (PULP)

Outside of Albany: Local AARP staff & volunteers available for interviews in most cities.

When: Wednesday, February 7, 2007 - 10AM

Where: LCA Room - Room 130, Legislative Office Building Albany, NY

Why: Older New Yorkers are more likely to buy and use their cell phone for safety in case of an emergency and having more detailed information on where the phone will work is critical. In addition, "The Wireless Telephone Service Consumer Protection Act" would put consumers in the driver's seat by allowing them to cancel their contracts after they receive their first bill if their cell service is not quite up to par, without having to pay a hefty termination fee.
